Every person who receives Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, has a responsibility to study Gods Word and develop their personal relationship with God. You'll notice I said that we have a, responsibility. Keeping in mind that a relationship with the Lord is exactly that, a RELATIONSHIP! People often ask me how to hear the voice of God. My first response is always this; Read His Word! Sometimes people struggle reading the Bible for a variety of reasons. Were going to look at 3 reasons today. Also we are going to examine the importance of reading Gods Word and the importance of having a set time and place, (A Secret Place) to read Gods Word! Lets jump in!
3 Reasons People Struggle reading Gods Word
#1. People Say: The Bible is Hard to Understand..
Some people say that the Word of God is hard to understand. So, they decide to not make any effort to understand it. Laziness is a common factor in this. The world has a mentality of giving up too easy. The world wants everything to be simple. So, when it comes to doing something that takes effort, usually people give up without much of a fight. This is why the divorce rate in America is exceedingly high. When it comes to relationships, people have been taught that if it gets too hard at times, just quit and find someone else. This is a lazy attitude that often Christians bring into their relationships with God. They assume since the Bible can be challenging at times to understand, that they should just give up on learning His Word. When trouble comes in their lives, they pray and cannot understand why their prayers don't seem to be working. The reality is this, the less you know about Gods Word, the less effective you are in life. Often peoples prayers don't work because they are praying the very opposite of what they should be praying, because they didn't take the time to find out HOW to pray according to the Word of God. Instead of reading their Bibles and finding out how to pray, they just complain to God with doubt and no faith and hope for a resolution. This is bad enough, but generally people take it a step farther and blame God when they don't see the answer they wanted.
All the while, if they would have taken the time to read and study His Word, they could have found the correct resolution and avoided the troublesome outcome. I want you to understand that nothing is impossible! If you really wanna understand the Word of God, you will. If your reading your Bible and come across some words you don't understand, LOOK THEM UP! As simple as this sounds, it's obviously a resolution to your misunderstanding. So, the excuse people use with misunderstanding is simply that, a excuse. I guarantee you that if you want to know something bad enough, you will find a way to understand it! Think about it this way.. When you were in school or college, you learned things that seemed foreign to you at first. You had no idea what you were learning at first. BUT, with the dedicated decision to study and learn, those things which you did not understand at first, now made perfect sense to you. The same principle is true when it comes to studying Gods Word. The Scripture says:
2 Timothy 3:14-17 Amplified
14 But as for you, continue in the things that you have learned and of which you are convinced [holding tightly to the truths], knowing from whom you learned them, 15 and how from childhood you have known the sacred writings (Hebrew Scriptures) which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus [surrendering your entire self to Him and having absolute confidence in His wisdom, power and goodness]. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed [given by divine inspiration] and is profitable for instruction, for conviction [of sin], for correction [of error and restoration to obedience], for training in righteousness [learning to live in conformity to God’s will, both publicly and privately—behaving honorably with personal integrity and moral courage]; 17 so that the [a] man of God may be complete and proficient, outfitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Here we can see why it is so important to keep Gods Word as a necessity in life! Don't ever let limitations in your natural mind keep you from studying Gods Word! If you have to, buy a dictionary! Use the internet as a tool for looking up words if you don't understand them. But never refuse to receive the revelations God has for you in His Word because of a lack of knowledge. Hosea 4:6 Says: My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge. Don't allow yourself to be destroyed for a lack of knowledge! Do everything you can to interpret Gods Word! In the end, you will benefit greatly from studying intensely His Word. You'll notice in this passage, at the end, it says that when we take Gods Word and study and apply it, we will be complete and proficient! It goes on to say that we will be equipped for EVERY GOOD WORK! So, don't get discouraged, if at first, you don't understand what you read in the scriptures. Make it your passion to dig deeper and study until it becomes revelation knowledge to you!
#2. People say: I get distracted easily when I try to read the Bible.
One thing I can tell you with confidence is this; Satan will do every single thing in his power to distract you and your efforts to know God more. He is the worst of the worst. He's like an annoying cat that constantly tries to knock things off the table, even when they know they shouldn't. He just keeps trying and trying. What you have to understand is, no matter what happens, regardless of what distractions you think are present, there is no justification through excuses as to why you don't read the Word of God. Never forget, YOU HAVE AUTHORITY OVER every demon in hell and Satan himself. (Luke 10:19) If, you notice that whenever you make a daily effort to read Gods Word there is a common distraction, find a way to silence that distraction. In other words, don't attempt to study your Bible with distractions present. While watching television. TURN OFF THE TV and get into Gods Word. Even if it's just on in the background, turn it off! The smallest noises can become a serious distraction. Silence those distractions. I use the TV as one small example, but there are so many more.
IF, you have a cell phone, which most people do, turn it OFF. People have become so dependent on their stupid cell phones they often forget that their is a real world around them. The devil uses cell phones, social media, games, etc, all the time to distract people. If you don't want to turn it off, turn the volume off. The last thing you need when your trying to read Gods Word is your stupid Facebook notifications going off. You can take it to the bank, the minute you decide to study Gods Word, your cell phone will start making noises. The devil, being the prince and power of the air, will make certain of that. He do whatever it takes to get your mind off of God and into the digital world. So, put your phone down, be a responsible Christian, and put God first. I know that sounds harsh, but it's the absolute truth. God has given us all things. The ability to breathe and live and function! The least we can do is give Him our undivided attention when we study His Word.
If, your a parent and you have children in the house, DO NOT BLAME THE KIDS for your lack of study in the Word of God. I have heard people use this excuse before and it's pathetic. If you have to make your devotional time with the Lord at night when they are in bed, so be it. A lot of parents feel exhausted after being with the kids all day. I know my wife does. She plays hard with the kids and focuses all her energy on them while they are awake. This is surely a blessing, but it can lead to physical exhaustion. The devil will tempt you to sit back and relax and watch the television, or tempt you to get on Facebook and scroll like a zombie after a long day with the kids. Not that watching television is bad, or being on the internet, BUT.. these things simply cannot take presidency over Gods Word. You have to learn to prioritize your life. If the only time you have to yourself and God is after the kids go to bed, than use that time wisely. As soon as they lay down, get your Bible out and start reading! Meditate on Gods Word! Jesus said; Come to me all who are heavy laden and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28) I can assure you, nothing will help you relax and feel at ease like Gods Word after a long and hard day! Your spirit will be energized and you will find peace and joy in your soul when you read the Word of God! After you spend time with your Lord and Savior, then if you want to watch some television or whatever, then enjoy that! Just make sure that Gods Word is first priority, and not the internet or television!
One last thing I will say about distractions is, regardless of your distraction, do not allow the devil to keep you from Gods Word!! The truth is, IF, Jesus Christ is the most important person in your life, you won't allow anything or anyone to get in your way of spending time with Him. Some of you reading this might need to examine your heart and make sure you haven't allowed things or people in your life to become more important than your savior. If He's not your first priority, you will continue to live a life full of distractions and never become the man or woman god intended you to be. If you allow the cares of this world to overcome your ability to spend time with God, you will never reach your full potential with God. Nothing in this world is worth compromising your relationship with Christ, NOTHING. So, be committed to spending time with the Lord through His Word and nothing will be able to stop you or hold you back! The Scripture says:
Isaiah 54:17 (KJV) 17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord.
#3. Some people will use ANY excuse to not read the Word of God
Have you ever met someone who, love the Lord, and they really do care about people, yet they will use any excuse they can think of to NOT read the Word of God. This is so frustrating to me. I know people, who truly do Love the Lord and are thankful for Him, yet they won't open their Bibles to save their lives. What's sad is that these people have no idea what their missing! They seriously have no clue how much they are missing in their relationship with Christ. These people will go to Church, listen to whats being preached, say amen, YET, not take the time to read Gods Word for themselves. This is a very dangerous way to live. These people often watch a lot of videos online of people preaching the Word. The reason this is dangerous is simple, if they hear something being taught to them that isn't Biblically correct, they would have no clue. They simply believe what they hear other people preach or say. I can assure you, as many true Bible believing preachers there are in this world, there are so many more that claim to teach the Word of God, yet they twist and distort it. This is why it is absolute that we study the Word of God ourselves! So, when we hear something being preached, we can know if it lines up with Gods Word, or not.
If, your one of these people, reading this today, I cannot encourage you enough to read Gods Word for yourself! Don't let other people dictate your beliefs concerning Gods Word. Don't get me wrong, you can learn a lot from other people in the body of Christ, BUT, you are required to have a personal relationship with Christ! This requires you to make the effort to read His Word and connect with Him on personal level! Just ask yourself this question. IF, someone asked you a question about the Bible, can you answer it? Do you know what Gods Word really says, or, do you know what you have heard people say about Gods Word? This is a very serious matter. Your ability to answer questions correctly can determine if someone gets saved, or dies and burns in hell for eternity. Don't be the reason that someone receives incorrect information about God! Be steadfast in your studies! Be ready in season and out of season! So, when the opportunity arises, you can be a attribute to the Kingdom of God and not a hindrance. Remember this, you may be the only Jesus anyone ever sees! They need to see a proper example of Christ through you! They cannot see that example unless you read Gods Word and prepare yourself to be a light for Him! Jesus said: Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned? It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
Here we can see that Jesus is saying that a person, who isn't prepared and seasoned in the ways of the Lord, ( a person who has lost their savour, or saltiness) will not be fit for anything concerning the Lord. This is a person who thinks they don't need Gods Word to be successful as a Christian. Or someone who at one time studied Gods Word, yet then became lazy and stopped reading Gods Word. Someone who allows other things in this world to take presidency over Gods Word. They don't realize the importance of being self sufficient in Biblical study. These people, according to Jesus are not fit for the Masters work. Do not allow yourself to be deceived. Do not allow yourself to become like this! Be a light in this dark world and be prepared with the knowledge of God, from His Word!! Be committed to God and His Word at ALL TIMES!! Refuse Satan! If you do this, the scripture says:
Isaiah 54:17 (KJV)
